Canadians love small cars, and automakers have responded. You’ll see all kinds of compacts and subcompacts at the Toronto auto show, in a wide range of prices.
Toyota Scion iQ
This little cutie is the smallest in Toyota’s entry-level Scion brand. It has its limitations, but if it fits your lifestyle, it’s a good little city runabout.
The 94 horses out of its 1.3 L four-cylinder engine don’t sound like much, but the car weighs very little and feels peppy. It also rides and handles better than you’d think, and it will turn on a dime and give you change.
It’s best with a maximum of three people. The passenger seat is actually set ahead of the driver’s — without obstructing visibility — so an adult can fit comfortable behind it. Drop the seat behind the driver for cargo (both rear seats fold flat) and you’re good to go. There’s also a fair-size spot on the floor behind the centre console where you can dump a purse or pack and still be able to reach it instantly.
Scion outfits its cars with all the must-have goodies (you can further customize it with dealer accessories) and the tag includes a/c, premium stereo, USB port, Bluetooth, power windows, keyless entry, heated mirrors and 11 airbags.
