Water is the oldest kind of transportation known to mankind.
Before the Loyalists came to the Quinte region, the First Nations used the waterways to get around.
Naval Marine Canadian Archive curator, Paul Adamthwaite, says water is still used for transportation locally – either for commerce or for recreation – and it’s the greenest way to go.
Adamthwaite says Essroc Cement uses the water of the Picton Bay for almost all of its transportation needs; and the County of Prince Edward was made into an island in order to accomodate shipping during the heyday of canneries.
So whether you’re using the Great Lakes for business or pleasure, you’re doing something that’s been done for generations in the Quinte region.
