Toyota Motor Corp. captured the top spots in five of the 10 categories in the U.S. Consumer Reports magazine’s 2012 best car models released Tuesday, becoming the first brand since 2003 to dominate the ranking.
The redesigned Toyota Camry Hybrid and the Highlander outscored competitors to become top picks in the family sedan and family sports utility vehicle categories, respectively. The Prius hybrid was chosen the best green car, while the RAV4 clinched the top spot for small SUV and the Sienna was recommended as the best family hauler.
Given the magazine’s well-regarded reputation for car tests and reviews, the annual ratings are influential on U.S. consumers’ auto-buying choices. The latest results are expected to give Toyota, hurt by decreased sales in the wake of the March 2011 earthquake, a boost for recovery.
