Drinking water is a necessity of life.
The Clean Water Act was developed after the Walkerton water tragedy in 2000 to make sure every region of the province maintained a safe source of drinking water.
A Source Water Protection Plan is being developed for the 11 sources of local drinking water in the Quinte region, which serve about half the population; the other half using their own sources, like wells.
The Quinte region’s Source Water Protection Plan spokesperson, Lucille Fragomeni, says the beauty of the the Act is that each region is tailoring a plan to its needs.
Fragomeni says the eyes of the world are on Ontario as committees across the province develop their plans.
A draft of Quinte’s in-depth plan will be made available for public input this April.
