Thanks to Ontario residents, two billion alcohol containers have been recycled into new products through the Ontario Deposit Return Program.
Alcohol containers such as plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans, bag-in-box wine containers and Tetra Pak containers can be returned to the Beer Store for a refund under the program. Returning containers creates employment as they are recycled into useful new products, such as new containers, fibreglass, car mats, seat belts, carpeting, clothing, insulation and cardboard.
If passed, Ontario’s proposed Waste Reduction Act would build on the success of programs like this to ensure more waste is recycled while creating new jobs and investment opportunities.
Protecting the environment through sustainable waste management is part of the government’s economic plan that is creating jobs for today and tomorrow. The comprehensive plan and its six priorities focus on Ontario’s greatest strengths — its people and strategic partnerships.
QUICK FACTS
- Recycling creates jobs. Every additional 1,000 tonnes of recycled waste generates seven new jobs.

- Currently, 80 per cent of all alcohol containers sold through the LCBO are returned to the Beer Store for a refund. Ontario has set a target of 85 per cent over the next year.
