Belleville will be working with other landowners on a plan to cleanup contamination at the site of the former coal tar gasification plant at Belleville’s harbour, as ordered by the Ministry of Environment.
Mayor Neil Ellis says that under the environmental regulations the city is responsible for much of the cleanup at the site of the former Belleville Gas Company, although much of the affected land has other owners.
And he says infrastructure work in the area does affect the coal tar contamination.
The city has put $2 million dollars in the capital budget last year toward the cleanup.
Ellis says the new purification pant at Meyers Pier could help.
