SaskPower is set to launch the first clean energy coal-fired power plant of its kind.
But an environmental group argues the move does little to mitigate the damage caused by greenhouse gas emissions.
On October 2nd, Saskatchewan’s power utility is unveiling a 1.4-billion dollar addition to a power plant near Estevan.
The project will outfit part of the Boundary Dam Power Station with a mechanism to capture carbon dioxide emissions and pump them into and underground storage facility.
The carbon capture technology aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, which is about 90 per cent of the plant`s emissions.
Sierra Club Canada director John Bennett says the project is an attempt to justify burning fossil fuels, maintaining the status quo.
But SaskPower C-E-O Robert Watson says the plant is a long-term fiscally responsible way of reducing C-O-2 emissions.
He says the plant is expected to become a model for other projects around the world.
