Ontario has announced a new tax credit for farmers who donate their products to community food programs, including food banks and student nutrition programs.
The food donation tax credit for farmers will be valued at 25 per cent of the fair market value of the products they donate.
The Liberal government says the tax credit is the only one of its kind in Canada and will help farmers donate more fresh food to their local food banks.
Susanne Quinlan director of operations at Gleaners Food Bank in Belleville says this is great news for Foodbanks from Picton to North Brook considering we live in a farming community.
Meantime, the Trenton Care and Share Food Bank is asking for help Saturday, for their annual food drive.
Volunteers will be collecting food donations door to door, from 9:30 am to noon in Trenton and surrounding suburbs.
If the timing does not work and you still want to make a donation, you can drop off the items at Metro, Fresco, Smylies Independent Grocer or Walmart.
Gleaners Food Bank in Belleville has a food drive set for Sunday.
