It looks like Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment is getting tough on the issue of a clean-up plan for the site of a former coal tar gas plant near Belleville’s harbour.
After waiting in vain for months for a plan from Belleville and other owners of the former gas plant site to clean up the contamination in the soil, the province has issued a “draft order” to the parties.
Ministry of Environment spokesperson Kate Jordan explains.
Jordan says the owners have until March 20 and then the order will be made public and 45 days after that action can be taken if there is no plan.
