An environmental tribunal hearing will take place this week regarding the Long’s Quarry in Melrose.
C.H. Demill, the operator of the quarry, is hoping to have a “stay” lifted on the right to pump water from the aggregate site.
Currently, Demill can only pump up to 50,000 litres a day out of the pit.
The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday at 10:00 a.m at the Travelodge Hotel in Belleville.
C.H. Demill is hoping to also to create a new pit, adjacent to Long’s Quarry.
The group Citizens Against Melrose Quarry wants to stop the expansion because they’re worried about water wells running dry, destruction of local roads, dust and noise pollution from the vehicles.
