Quinte Conservation will begin to draw down water levels above the Colebrook Dam on Monday, July 27, 2015.
Water Resources Technologist Christine McClure says, “Over the next two weeks we will be gradually drawing down water levels in preparation for the repair work that needs to be done on the dam. Residents upstream of the dam can expect water levels to remain low until the project is finished in the late fall. Downstream residents may see a temporary increase in water levels. The project will repair cracks in the concrete, add new piers, and ensure the Colebrook Dam meets Dam Safety Guidelines.”
Quinte Conservation staff will be monitoring the pond above the dam during the work to ensure that fish and wildlife will not be harmed.
McClure adds, “People should always exercise caution when boating, hiking, or fishing near dams. Be alert to changing water levels and remember to read and pay attention to warning signs near dams.”
The Colebrook Dam is on the Napanee River in the Hamlet of Colebrook, in Stone Mills Township. It can be accessed via County Road Number 1, north from Hamlet of Yarker to Colebrook. It was originally constructed in 1836 to provide water power for a saw and grist mill. It now serves as a local recreational attraction providing boating and limited fishing opportunities.
The project is a cooperative effort between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Stone Mills Township, and Quinte Conservation. For the most up to date information on the project, visit the Stone Mills Township website.
