More and more people are moving out of the country and into cities every year, causing megacity air pollution to rapidly become hazardous to both public health and the environment.
According to the World Health Organization, outdoor air pollution has increased 8% since 2011.
China has one of the biggest air pollution problems in the world and lots of people living there tend to wear special facemasks to help to filter out the pollution.
But now there looks to be good news on the horizon for China to help battle pollution.
After Milan and Losanna now China is going to have its first Vertical Forest, in Nanjing, by Stefano Boeri Architetti.
Nanjing Green Towers, which is scheduled to be finished in 2018, is composed of two towers located in Nanjing Pukou District, an area destined to lead the modernization of southern Jiangsu and the development of the Yangtze River economic zone.
A real vertical forest with more than 1,000 trees and 2,500 shrubs and bushes that will help to regenerate local biodiversity. It will provide a 25 tons of CO2 absorption each year and will produce 132 pounds of oxygen everyday.
The architect has plans to build similar buildings in other Chinese cities like Chongqing, Shijiazhuang, Liuzhou, Guizhou and Shanghai.
In 2014 China’s government announced they were working hard to reduce the amount of pollution in the air. Since then they’ve been closing down coal-burning factories, and limiting the amount of traffic on roads.
