Quinte region flood outlook extended

Quinte Conservation has extended its Flood Outlook Statement for the Moira River, Black River near Actinolite, and the Skootamatta River.

In a press release issued Thursday, general manager Terry Murphy said while these rivers are running high, residents can expect water levels below a typical spring runoff.

“This means properties that usually get wet in the spring may already be wet, or could expect water to encroach on their lawn,” said Murphy. “There may be some nuisance flooding of low lying lands.”

The Black River near Actinolite and the Moira River at Highway 7 have stabilized. The Skootamatta River is rising slowly and should peak early Friday. Stoco Lake is still rising and should peak Friday. The Moira River at Foxboro will continue to rise and peak Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Lower Trent Conservation Authority has issued a water safety statement for Rice Lake and the Trent River from Hastings to Trenton due to high water flows.

While the Trent River normally peaks in mid to late April, above normal temperatures through late February combines with recent rainfall has initiated the spring runoff on the river system about a month earlier than normal.

Flooding is not expected.

The Lower Trent and Quinte Conservation authorities are advising everyone especially children to stay clear of waterways.
