Belleville has received some provincial recognition for its work in promoting cycling in the city.
The city has earned a Bicycle Friendly Community Bronze Award, after unveiling its first two bike lanes on Yeomans and North Park Streets last year and committing to building more cycling infrastructure this year as well.
Speaking on the Lorne Brooker Show this week, Justin Jones of Belleville on Bikes explained the plans for new bike lanes this year are quite ambitious, starting with a bike route along Bridge Street East, all the way to Haig Road.
Jones added there is also some work to be done in the Cannifton Road area as well.
He also said it’s an exciting time for cyclists in Belleville, as practically the whole city will have cycling infrastructure in place by the end of 2018.
The Bike Friendly Community program is now in its 7th year and has awarded a total of 39 designations, with two gold, seven silver and 30 bronze.
No community has yet earned platinum or diamond status.
Belleville on Bikes is also ramping up a number of cycling education programs, which you can learn more about, by clicking here to visit the group’s website.
