Green Energy Act fight continues

The Prince Edward County citizens’ group fighting aspects of Ontario’s Green Energy Act is sitting in a waiting mode this summer, awaiting a legal decision.

The County Coalition for Safe and Appropriate Green Energy launched what it calls a “public interest case” a year and a half ago.

Spokesperson Ann Dumbrille says it calls for a Judicial Review of the act.

She says the Act affects the entire province, particularly “the entire rural area where turbines are threatening” the lifestyle.

The group is now in a legal tangle over costs.

Dumbrille says the group went to court earlier this summer to seek its designation as a “public interest case” to get immunity from having to pay the lawyer costs for turbine company, WPD, and the provincial government.

Those costs could go to more than $150,000.

A court decision on this aspect of the case is expected by the end of this month.

The group itself has a lawyer working for free, but is fundraising for other related costs which Dumbrille says could be as high as $30,000.
