The City of Quinte West is holding its first ever Giveaway Day on Saturday April 20, 2019. This event will run from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and all residents are invited to take part.
On Giveaway Day, residents are invited to place unwanted household items that are still in good condition on the curb in front of their home for others to take. This is a great opportunity to give old items a new life while reducing waste.
Residents can place their giveaway items at the curb or road in front of their home with stickers or signs on the items that are labelled as free. Ensure that any items on the property that are not to be taken are kept away from the giveaway items. At the end of the day, residents must bring uncollected items back into their home or they may be subject to fines from Bylaw Enforcement.
Appropriate items to include on Giveaway Day are: DVDs, books, furniture, small appliances, kitchen items and construction materials including hardware, lumber and drywall. The Consumer Product Safety Bureau of Health Canada advises against including cribs, car seats, strollers, bath seats and playpens to avoid unsafe use.
“Giveaway Day will provide our residents with an opportunity to get rid of items they no longer want or need without creating as much waste. You may not need something anymore but one of your neighbours may have a use for it,” says City of Quinte West Mayor, Jim Harrison. “Spring is a popular time of year for many people to clean up their homes and get rid of unwanted clutter – this way we won’t be sending it all to a landfill.”
