Fruit plants were tricked by the warm weather into blooming before cold weather came and wiped those blooms.

Colin Campbell of Campbell’s Orchard’s on Rednersville Rd. says it’s still too early to tell exactly how much crop has been affected… but some orchards in Ontario have reported 80 to 100 percent of their crop may be “unharvestable”.

Of the 1-million blossoms on his farm Campbell says they only need to draw 5 percent of that to consider it a “good harvest”.

As your grandpa will tell you, baking soda is a decent abrasive whitener. But brushing the powder straight onto your teeth can cause major irritation and long-term enamel erosion. Make sure it’s well diluted in a homemade paste with vegetable glycerine and some dissolved xylitol as your cavity-fighting sweetener. You can also cut the top off an organic strawberry and rub the berry on your teeth. The inside of an orange peel works too, according to TV docs. What the prime time tips don’t share with viewers is that you should use both techniques sparingly and rinse and brush right after any homemade teeth whitening since it can erode your enamel. Need I remind you that enamel doesn’t grow back, and that enamel erosion will make enjoying things such as, oh, ice cream or coffee seriously uncomfortable? Unless that sounds enticing, I’d stay away from harsher enamel-busting lemon remedies in particular.

If Canada is to have a green future, bright and energetic young Canadians who are passionate about the environment must lead the way. In partnership with Earth Day Canada, Toyota is fostering the educational growth of young leaders who have a passion for environmental action.

Twenty special students who have demonstrated such leadership were recognized today for their outstanding contributions. They are the regional winners of the tenth annual Toyota Earth Day Scholarships, which were announced by Toyota Canada and Earth Day Canada in celebration of Earth Week.

The students, who are in their graduating year of high school, will be honoured in local ceremonies across the country. Each will receive $5,000 to help them further their academic careers. They can apply their award funds directly toward educational expenses for the first year of full-time post-secondary studies in Canada.

The 20 regional winners will now move on as finalists for the 2012 Toyota Earth Day Scholarship National Award. One winner will be chosen from among these finalists to receive a Panasonic notebook computer in addition to the $5,000 scholarship. The national winner will be announced in May.

The Toyota Earth Day Scholarship Program was established by Earth Day Canada, with financial support from Toyota Canada Inc., to reward and encourage environmental commitment and action among students.

Now in its 10th year the Toyota Earth Day Scholarship program has awarderd 160 Canadian students more than $800,000 through the program.
