Brighton council has endorsed an effort by Nature Canada to have Lake Ontario be designated as a National Marine Conservation Area.
Monday council supported a resolution asking the federal and provincial government commission a feasibility study of having a conservation area established while consulting with municipalities, indigenous communities, businesses, and residents.
A National Marine Conservation Area would serve to protect the lake’s ecosystems, biodiversity, and cultural heritage.
There are currently 5 Conservation Areas in Canada and it’s hoped 10 more will be created by 2030.
