Local municipalities are once again holding curbside Giveaway Days.
The annual event in Belleville and Quinte West gives household items new life and help reduce landfill waste.
On May 3 and 4, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., residents are invited to place unwanted household items in good condition curbside for others to take.
Appropriate items to give away include DVDs, books, furniture, small appliances, kitchen items and construction materials, such as hardware, lumber and drywall.
Printable “free” signs can be found on the City of Quinte West and the City of Belleville’s Giveaway Days webpages for participants to use.
Put giveaway items curbside by 8 a.m. and bring any remaining items back inside by 8 p.m.
Canada’s Consumer Product Safety Directorate advises against giving away cribs, car seats, strollers, bath seats and playpens to avoid unsafe use.
“I encourage everyone to take part in this year’s curbside Giveaway Days,” says City of Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison. “This event is a great opportunity for our community to come together, give new life to unwanted items, and keep reusable goods out of our landfills.”
“We are excited that Giveaway Days are back again this spring,” says City of Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis. “This event is always a favourite in the community. It’s a great opportunity to do some spring cleaning, pass along your unused items for others to enjoy and it helps divert waste from our landfills.”
Prince Edward County is holding its Large Item Swap the same weekend, also inviting resident to place their lightly used large items at the curb for other residents to take and continue to use.
For those living in rural areas, the municipality encourages residents to post their items and location in the event page on Facebook for people to peruse. This will help reduce greenhouse gases and improve interest in the program. Those living in the settlement areas are also welcome to post the items they will be offering.
