June 3 is World Bicycle Day.
The World Health Organization established the day in 2018 to recognize “the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle… a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport, fostering environmental stewardship and health.”
In conjunction with the day, Northumberland Tourism, in partnership with Regional Tourism Organization 8 (RTO8), which is financially supported from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, has launched a Bike Repair Station pilot project.
Northumberland Tourism has acquired five state-of-the-art Bike Repair Posts from Ontario-based manufacturer Greenspoke that are being installed in various communities across the county, near or along popular cycling routes.
The locations were determined based on consultations with cycling club members, representatives of Sustainable Cobourg’s Bicycle Action Committee, and host municipalities.
The freestanding stations each include a full set of tools for cyclists to make any needed adjustments or any unexpected repairs, to help keep rolling along.
The initiative aims to foster a vibrant cycling community while attracting cycling enthusiasts from far and wide to explore the picturesque landscapes and charming towns of Northumberland.
Bike repair stations are being placed in the following locations:
- Campbellford – Old Mill Park by the Two Dollar Coin, 51 Grand Rd (now available)
- Port Hope – Behind Port Hope Town Hall, 56 Queen St. (now available)
- Cobourg – Cobourg Marina, 103 3rd St. (coming soon)
- Brighton – Harbour St. Parkette, 147 Harbour St. (coming soon)
- Bewdley – Bewdley Optimist Waterfront Park, 5073 Rice Lake Dr N, Bewdley (coming soon)
Northumberland Tourism encourages both residents and visitors to take advantage of these new bike repair stations and contribute to a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation culture within the region.
