Ontario has broken ground on a battery energy storage project south of Ottawa to power nearly 400-thousand homes in what will be the single largest battery storage facility in Canadian history.
The new Skyview 2 system in the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal is expected to enable the storage of baseload generation – such as nuclear and hydro – and the integration of intermittent resources like wind and solar.
Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Energy and Mines Stephen Lecce were on hand for Wednesday’s ground breaking ceremony.
The facility will store electricity during periods of low demand and return that stored power to the system when demand is higher once it is operational in 2027.
The Skyview 2 project is a lithium-ion battery energy storage facility procured through the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) Long-Term 1 Request for Proposals (LT1 RFP).
Developed in partnership between Potentia Renewables Inc. and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, the facility builds on other projects such as the Oneida Energy Storage facility, to bring Ontario’s total energy storage capacity to nearly 3,000 megawatts (MW).
The province says the venture is expected to create up to three-hundred jobs during construction and additional operational positions upon completion.
